Roberta Fischer’s retirement is shattered when her son Jack is released from prison and comes home to live. His behavior evokes explosive reactions from Roberta, frightening her and adding yet another layer of guilt. Kenisha is a bright, but very pregnant, African-American girl from a dysfunctional home whom Roberta meets at the Teen Moms’ Center. As their friendship grows Roberta works to redeem herself as a mother by helping Kenisha find a road to a better life. Roberta promotes staying in school and putting the coming baby up for adoption, but Kenisha insists that she will keep the baby, no matter what. Why? “Because having a baby is the only way to have something to love that will love you back.” Navigating a perilous path that includes violence and tragedy as well as unimaginable joy, Jack, Kenisha, and Roberta all discover that a good life sometimes comes at a very high price.

This short fast-paced novel is packed with just about every emotion and circumstance one can imagine. At the core of the story is the splintered relationship between the protagonist Roberta, a middle-aged divorced woman, and her troubled son Jack, who returns home following an 8-year prison term for attempting to rob a bank. The story moves along quickly as we are introduced to the elements of Roberta's busy, compassionate life. She volunteers at an animal spay-neuter facility, a teen mom's center, and is a member of a music group that entertains at churches and senior homes. It seems clear Roberta has filled her days with giving service to others in an attempt to make up for what she perceives must have been her failure as a mother. Coincidental with Jack's return home and the traumatic scenes that evolve between mother and son, Roberta is developing a serious relationship with a young pregnant girl, Kenisha, whom she has met at the teen center. Kenisha is a fifteen-year-old black teenager who has been raised in one of the city's projects in a totally dysfunctional and violent family. She is determined to keep her baby and continue her schooling. Roberta is challenged to find a safe place for Kenisha and her baby to live while, at the same time, trying to control her own violent bouts of anger at son Jack's uncaring outrageous behavior. The book is filled with action and keeps the reader wondering how and when Roberta will find the love she so desperately seeks. You will not be disappointed in this very realistic and true-to-life story. I recommend it.

Someone to Love Ms Gail Claire Kiracofe 9781484960059 Books Reviews

I just finished reading `Someone to Love'. It didn't take long because I couldn't put it down, dropping everything else to read it. It deals with two strong themes, race and age, contrasting a pregnant 15 year old from a Project background having dangerously dysfunctional relations, with a respectable retired woman from a conventional, educated background. This unlikely pair become engaged by compassion that grows into love.

Love is the background to all the relationships in the book, in an original story with many twists. The older woman has a troubled adult son, just out of prison, needing help at every level as he drains her resources, stretching her to the limit.

Motherly instincts, neighborly kindness, the fierce resolution of the young girl to keep her baby, convinced it's the only way to have someone to love who will love you back.
And unexpected romance. Turns out there are lots of ways to experience love in this uplifting book.

There's a shocking climax. It's a page-turner. Don't miss it.
Aptly titled, Gail Kiracofe's novel kept me turning the pages. Each action-scene builds on the last, and each chapter hooked me into wanting to know what would happen next. From the beginning, I began to care about the various characters, even the lost and damaged among them. They are all folk I could meet on the street today in any multiracial, multicultural city. There is Roberta, the older, middle-class, white woman, the protagonist who tells the story. She's a very real person in her conflicting emotions, her loves and hates, her self-doubt, her humility, her willingness to learn, and not least her wry humor about her own needs and failings. Somehow, she feels an instant rapport with the African-American teenager she meets by chance. The 14 year-old is from a rough housing project and an even rougher family. She is pregnant and determined to keep her baby while continuing on in high school. How to do this when all the odds are against her is the central problem that Roberta takes on. Roberta shows the wisdom and perseverance that age can bestow. She makes mistakes in unfamiliar, difficult and, ultimately, life-threatening situations. But then she picks herself up to try again, while, on the journey, winning the help of colleagues, friends and neighbors, and even a new love of her own. Roberta's story reinforces for me how loving other human beings unconditionally can bring both high points and low. The story lights up with some happy times but also is also consumed in the fire of tragic and heart-rending outcomes. As in real life, though, there is no hard line between the joy and the suffering. I thoroughly enjoyed the many layers of experience and insight in this first novel. Even handling the physical book was fun because it is a manageable length at about 200 pages and the font is clear and attractive--a rare experience these days in a paperback. Gail Kiracofe tells us that the story is partly from her own experience. Let us hope other parts of her life spark equally rich and compelling material for her next novel.
I loved the way this story was written in great depth and details. An easy read as everything was described to give full insight of what was happening to each character, therefore making it easy to track them as individuals and their part in this moving encounter.
When Someone to Love arrived in the mail, I flipped it open and by Page 2 was immediately caught up in the unique story line, scrapped my plans for the afternoon and finished the book.

For so short a novel, it is packed with drama, i.e. Roberta's struggle to understand and love her wayward son Jack, whose explosive behavior she had battled throughout his childhood;
Jack's total lack of empathy and apparent inability to love or respect anyone, including his mother; the racial repercussions caused by Roberta's interest in helping Kenisha gain a good life.

Although this book contains violence and heartbreaking tragedy, the author somehow manages to invoke joy, humor and nuggets of wisdom among the pages.

This is a great little book.
A good read for book clubs.
